I remember being in 7th grade, at the end of a September, and being called in by the school principal with my mother, and the securitate officer assigned to my family's case. We wanted to leave Romania and reunite with my father in the United States and these political puppets were paid to talk us out of it. They used a variety of tactics to get us to sign a document that we renounced on wanting to reunite with my father and tried to bribe us with fancy living arrangements and better jobs for my mother, and even my father if he would return back from the USA. I was young, but that moment played a big part in teaching me how evil and dishonorable it is for a government to intervene in people's families and private lives.

Not long ago, I purchased a home in a small town in the Southern California mountains. The streets were empty, and the silence and peace was good, but deafening. I remembered how in previous residences I hardly knew anything about my neighbors, and avoided contact. Yet, I made an effort to introduce myself and meet my neighbors. Within a few days, I met and shook hands with neighbors 3-4 homes down in both directions. Some of them even became my Facebook friends, and some share good mountain-living advice and suggestions whenever they see me. It's a wonderful feeling to live in an area where you know and trust your neighbors. Whatever you do when you move to a new place, try to make an effort to at least say "Hello." You'll be glad!

Almost 10 years ago, I was at a point in my life when I said that I needed to stay away from love and relationships for several years in order to finish my education, and get my finances in order. I was convinced that I needed to stay away from romance and dating so that I could focus on the important things that needed to be resolved. Yet, when least expected, I met someone and instantly fell in love. Days later I asked her to marry me. We are happily married now and have a wonderful child together. Sometimes life can't be planned, and love can't be rationalized away. Follow your instincts, not your plans for the future. You'll know what to do!

Many years ago, during my beginning years as a teacher, an opportunity arose for me to teach at a school closer to home. I dressed well, made copies of helpful documents, and mentally prepared myself to face the committee made up of parents, students, teachers, and administrators that were there to hire a teacher. I was asked a variety of questions, yet instead of responding directly with what I would do in certain situations, I responded with what I wouldn't do. I didn't get that job, and a later conversation with the principal who interviewed me made me learn that interviews need specific answers to specific questions. If a question is unclear, just ask for the question to be repeated.

My doctor was getting worried about my increasing appetite and my chance for developing diabetes. I agreed to take a powerful diet drug and an anti cholesterol drug which gave me heart palpitations and insomnia. Instead of contacting my doctor about these side effects I continued on for 6 weeks until chest pains and difficulty of breathing made it unbearable. Doctor got me off the medications instantly and had me take a heart stress test. Results came up fine, and I sure learned my lesson. Medicine can be harmful and patients need to be proactive and communicate with their doctors when issues arise. It's important to communicate with your doctor frankly, your life may be on the line.

Today I said to myself I would stay awake all night to catch up with late work. I should have gone to bed instead of wasting time and working at 1 mile per hour. Not sleeping is neither healthy nor helpful in the long run.
